How can you serve?
Just as your own home is given warmth by decorations, flowers, and furniture, so too is our parish home. The Altar Guild is responsible for the weekly care and upkeep of the sanctuary with clean altar linens, fresh flowers or plants called for by the season, and maintaining these plants and those in the Commons. Seasonal decoration on a grander scale, like Christmas and Easter, is also part of the Guild’s ministry. Members also launder the purificators used with the communion chalices and take care that they are returned to the Sacristy within a couple of days. The priest’s vestments are also laundered or taken to the dry cleaners on a regular basis. Members work in rotating teams of three (3). You do not have to be an experienced decorator or gardener to belong to the guild. Everyone’s gift is appreciated, and everyone learns from the other and takes satisfaction in providing a welcoming, prayerful environment. Please contact Grace Jones at the parish office or call (757) 428-8547.
Altar Servers are boys and girls, ages 9 and older, who are attentive to the immediate altar needs of the priest at all liturgies. They lead processions, stay in the sanctuary during liturgy, and join the assembly in prayer. Servers are scheduled in groups of three on a rotating basis. A new schedule is prepared every eight weeks and is available for pickup in the Sacristy. Servers are trained at large workshops every six months and have the opportunity for individual training as well. They are familiar with the correct terms for books and all other objects used in the celebration of liturgy, and they are expected to handle these objects with care and respect. Servers have the opportunity at an early age to become active in the faith-life of the parish and to enrich their own faith. Please contact Grace Jones at the parish office or (757) 428-8547.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Children’s Liturgy of the Word opens the Sunday Gospel to children 4 through 8 years old. The children hear the Word on an age appropriate level. Children’s Liturgy of the Word is offered at the 5:00 p.m. liturgy on Saturdays and the 10:00 a.m. liturgy on Sundays. There is no registration. Just attend either of the liturgies that offers Children’s Liturgy of the Word, and have your child come forward when the Priest calls the children for Children’s Liturgy of the Word. For more information, contact Nancy Liette at the parish office or call (757) 428-8547.
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion
Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, along with the priest, serve to share the Body and Blood of Christ with the congregation. This is an obvious sign of our unity. The ministers are “in” communion with every person at their station. Ministers may also take Eucharist to the sick or home-bound and assist persons with a request to bring communion to a loved one. Certainly we have many communicants, but the sign of the Lord’s Body and Blood given for all, to all, and by all is powerful and moving and appropriate. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are scheduled for each liturgy. Training is offered regularly to participants. Schedules are prepared every eight weeks. If you have any questions or interest in being an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, please contact Grace Jones at the parish office or call (757) 428-8547.
Greeters welcome and care for all parishioners and visitors at Liturgy. This includes providing a comfortable place for worship. This means tidying up after Liturgy, distributing bulletins after Liturgy, putting hymn books back in the racks, etc. Greeters welcome and worship with the assembly. Greeters also assist in the collection of the offerings at Liturgy and assist in the smooth flow of the communion lines. A new schedule is prepared every eight weeks and is available for pickup in the Sacristy. Greeters must attend scheduled training sessions throughout the year. This ministry is open to everyone. We encourage families, couples, and singles to volunteer for this ministry. If you have any questions or interest in being a Greeter, please contact Grace Jones at the parish office or call (757) 428-8547.
Scripture is our faith-family’s story. God’s Word is as alive today as when first proclaimed and will continue to be. In proclaiming the Word of the Lord, Lectors share that story with us, allowing us to hear God speaking to us. Lectors are also called upon for seasonal, holy day, and special liturgies related to parish life. They attend training sessions each year, and have the opportunity for individual training. They learn to improve their ability to proclaim the Word. They learn how to read narratives, poetry, and dialogue found in Scripture. (Materials are provided). Two Lectors are designated for each weekend liturgy. A new schedule is prepared every two months and is available for pickup in the Sacristy. If you have any questions or interest in being a Lector, please contact Grace Jones at the parish office or call (757) 428-8547.
We offer praise and thanksgiving to God by encouraging and enhancing the song of the assembly at parish liturgies. Our Choir sings at the 10:00 Liturgy on Sunday mornings. We rehearse Thursday evenings from 7:30 until 9:00, and we meet at 9:15 on Sunday mornings to warm up. The requirements for joining are a willingness to attend rehearsals on a regular basis and the ability to carry a tune on a pitch. Our Teen music group sings and plays at one liturgy each month. We rehearse on most Sunday evenings at 6:30. If you enjoy singing or you play an instrument, we would love to have you join us. A Cantor proclaims the Responsorial Psalm at each weekend liturgy and at weddings and funerals and invites and encourages the assembly in its song. Cantors rehearse at 7:00 on Wednesday evenings, and most cantors are also members of the choir. We are blessed to have several competent instrumentalists who share their talents at weekend liturgies. If you play an instrument and are willing to practice on a regular basis, we would love to have you join us. Contact Bryce Miller or call (757) 428-8547.
