Star of the Sea Social Outreach
Social Outreach is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. offering a bag lunch, drink, and dessert to all that come. Fruits, vegetables, bread, and desserts donated by area grocery stores are sorted, cleaned and available to those in need. The food pantry and a limited amount of financial aid is available for prescription medication and for families facing eviction or cut-off notice on utilities. Volunteers make sandwiches, prepare fruits and vegetables, interview and pack groceries. Volunteers can work one day a week or one day a month. The phone number to the Outreach Center is 428-1244.
Christmas Giving Tree
Working with local agencies, some local families, and the homeless, gift wishes of children and adults who would otherwise not have a nice Christmas, are placed on the parish Christmas Giving Tree, taken by parishioners, filled and returned to Church for distribution. Volunteers sort and deliver gifts to the agencies, and/or have hours of pick-up at the church.
Drivers
Volunteer drivers to pick up food from grocery stores are needed on different days of the week, predominately during the morning hours. Most are two-hour commitments.
Meals on Wheels
Volunteers deliver meals Monday through Friday during the first week of each month using their own vehicles to deliver to assigned areas in Virginia Beach. Delivery time is about two and a half hours during the workday.
Migrant Ministry
This ministry collects needed items for migrants on the Eastern Shore in conjunction with St. Charles Parish during the months of June through Labor Day. One evening a week beginning in July through Labor Day, volunteers visit with migrants for the summer months. Need some Spanish-speaking persons as well as those who do not speak Spanish.
Soup Kitchen
Volunteers cook and serve meals at the Judeo-Christian Outreach Center in 4 teams of 8 persons each. Each team prepares two dinners. (Star of the Sea teams service six times a years).
Thanksgiving Food Baskets
Through the generosity of Star of the Sea parishioners, volunteers collect, purchase, package, distribute Thanksgiving Baskets during the daytime for those in need in the local area.
To volunteer for any of these activities, please contact Sister Mary Ann.
